What is an AI Agent?

AI agents represent the next evolution of automation. While traditional tools like Zapier or Make follow predefined rules, AI agents can interpret goals and dynamically decide how to achieve them.

An AI agent typically has three capabilities:

1. Perception — understanding input data or context

2. Reasoning — deciding what actions to take

3. Execution — performing tasks via tools or APIs

For example, instead of simply “sending an email when a form is submitted,” an AI agent can:

The biggest difference is autonomy. Automation follows instructions. AI agents follow outcomes.
